I am about to take the GMAT to get the ball rolling on getting a masters degree.

Just curious to hear from those that have taken in what there experiences were. How many times did you take it? How did you study for it? Was the actual test a lot harder than you had anticipated?

I have talked to a few friends and family members that have taken it. Some have gone to great business schools, while some went to decent ones. In general, those that were going to the better business schools felt a lot more pressure as a great score really helps with admissions.

I took the GMAT about 7 years ago for the first and only time. I studied for the test by using one of the large test prep books (can't remember the name) which I bought at the local bookstore. BTW, I started studying three months prior to the test date.

The math part was my biggest concern because it had been 10 years since I had been in school, and I really needed to refresh my knowledge. I wasn't as concerned with the verbal section since I always did well on the practice tests. Lastly, I quickly glanced over some tips on how to structure the writing section of the test.

I will say that I was a bit surprised when I was actually taking the test because the verbal part (the area I thought I would do really well in) was tough. I actually panicked a bit because the questions seemed so different from the study book and practice tests. The other sections were fine.

I was pleased with my score, so I didn't feel the need to retake the test - I also had a good undergrad GPA and work history. Of course I would love to say that I got at least a 700 on the GMAT, but I didn't want to go through the stress and anxiety again to try to raise my score. Plus, the test isn't cheap.

I took it once, got somewhere in the upper-mid 600s - like 80-85th percentile. Pretty solid, not great. Certainly not enough for Harvard, etc., but that was fine with me. That said, I didn't study as much as I should have. It was pretty much about as hard as I thought it would be. The most difficult aspect of it is not the questions per se; it's the time management. It goes by pretty fast, so you have to be efficient as well as accurate.
