The biggest factor is geographic instability--I can't say with any certainty where we'll be living 16 years from now. So I don't know if it would be a good idea to pre-pay tuition in the state I live in now. Plus, there's no guarantee he'll be accepted by the better schools in the state. They say you can use the account for other states, but would it be enough, especially if we had to pay out-of-state tuition? For those reasons, I think a 529 on my own makes more sense.
