My son is always complaining about the poor public speaking skills of his college instructors and professors. He says they could use some classes in public speaking because they break pretty much every rule in public speaking.
What is your experience with your instructors and professors? Rate them on a 1-10 scale!
I earned my undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering in California. Very few of my professors were American born. Most were Chinese, Iranian, Indian, Egyptian, French, or Polish. It was very difficult to understand them. For some reason, the Mechanical and Civil engineering and physics professors I had were mostly (I think all) American born. I think I got more out of those classes.
For this semester I'd say they run the gauntlet from like 3 to 7. The 3 is my Arabic professor. Highly qualified I suppose, but just a complete ******* on a personal level.
The instructor that I rate as 7 is for sophomore writing. She's great but the class is way...way...too unstructured.
this varies so much from school to school, and even among departments in a particular school, that i can't see anything conclusive coming form this thread
i would have two very different numbers depending on whether i answered for my bachelors or masters
I think many colleges hire people from overseas because they come cheaper but of course many of them speak limited English.
There's also the huge influx of foreign students in masters and doctoral degrees, especially at big research universities, and many of those students may teach undergrad courses.

IME it depends on the field. My math professors were uniformly poor speakers, partly due to accents and partly due to their inability to answer questions on the fly. My theater professors were all significantly better, even the ones who weren't actors. My law professors were all excellent speakers, though they really didn't teach all that much; the students did much of the speaking during class. My psychology professors were pretty good, though they had more variation in their speaking skills.

I think a lot of universities have a fairly set salary range for professors and instructors, though their salaries probably depend on their subject/department/college. I know that law and medicine professors get paid more, philosophy and classics professors get paid squat, etc. (Not that I necessarily disagree with that.)
Well, it's been a few years but for "public speaking skills" I'd rate most of my profs high 8-10. I had one that would probably rate a 2 or 3 but she was/is brilliant and I learned more from her than any other prof so who cares? I had one prof that was in his last semester teaching and didn't give a darn....for that I'd rate him about a -10.
As for what I learned, other than Mr. -10, I'd give them all a 10, which is really what is important.
