This was posted by someone else on a different forum. The survey had an 80% response rate. Athletes were more likely to admit to cheating than non-athletes; and, males were more likely to admit to cheating than females. 42% of freshmen admitted to cheating on assignments while 10% admitted to cheating on a test prior to attending the university. Last year, Harvard had a cheating scandal.

Sigh.

When he was in the second grade, my younger son came home and informed us that he knew why you did not cheat on school work.

He said his teacher told him, "It's because you might get a better grade but it doesn't make you any smarter."

Marilyn vos Savant recently said the same thing:

Do Cheaters Ever Prosper?

What are these kids thinking?

58% of the incoming class are liars. Everyone had cheated on something at least once.

I never cheated. Never. Didn't have to, because I studied and learned the material.

There's a difference at cheating on something silly like a game of hide-n-seek and cheating on something serious like homework.

That being said... what the heck is "cheating on homework"? Homework isn't even graded or checked unless you're in the 1st grade and still learning that you need to do homework.

What's the definition of cheating?

If prior to your final exam, your friends hand you the past three final exams from a your class and all three of these exams are about the same, and you use them to study for the final and you get a very good grade (say significantly better than you would have received by studying conventionally), is that cheating?

Cheating requires prior consent by the individual to abide by something then break it.

Social contracts don't count.

If you did not do it but just copied what someone else did, I would consider it cheating, whether it was graded or not. Plagiarism is cheating.

I don't know if you attended a private school, but I attended public schools and had graded homework assignments all the way to the 12th grade.

Just as an example of what's considered cheating, the Harvard cheating scandal in 2012 involved a take home test. It was a short answer exam. Some students had exactly the same answers down to typographical errors.

Who gives a crap? As an engineering student, I see it all the time. However, people usually have their limits and still put in the effort. It's nearly impossible to cheat on exams, because you have to know the material if you want a good grade.
