My university was about a fifteen-minute drive from my parents' house. I moved out my sophomore year into an apartment about halfway between the two. After college, I stayed local until I was 29-years-old. Then, my spouse and I moved across the country. We've relocated several more times since then to various parts of the country.
I was like 3 maybe 3.5 hours. I thought that was a good distance. Far enough away that the social life was good. When school is too close to home ie 45 minutes or even an hour everyone goes home for the weekends to hangout with hs friends instead of making new friends at college.
I liked the distance. Far enough away that you felt like you were away but close enough to come home for all holidays and stuff. Some of my fondest memories of college are roadtripping or caravanning it to and from school after breaks with friends.
From the nearest metro station of my place to the metro station of my school is about 20 minutes away.
