By the title of the thread, it appears that the OP was considering doing CS for a living. That would require studying CS with all the theoretical classes. However, to become a software engineer, you don't even need a degree. It's not clear, from the OP and title, what the OP wants to do. Is it CS, software engineering, software development, or DBA?

I'm just looking into programming and DBA. I do believe I'll still need to take a few theoretical classes for the major requirements should I choose to get into programming.

My understanding is while you can go into programming without a degree, more and more companies are requiring the degree to validate your knowledge, especially with how competitive the field is becoming.
