why? Because when you get a job, have a young family, etc. there just often isn't the time or the money to take fun trips to the beach with all of your friends.
Not all college kids go on wild spring breaks, MOST kids do not. Our kids came home for spring break but I would have been happy for them if they went somewhere too. They chose not to spend the money because they are doing a travel abroad instead and are saving money for that . Most of their friends are on trips with sports teams for spring break, several are on trips with Habitat for Humanity for spring break. A few went on vacation with their families and a lot just went home.

My kids spring breaks were often road trips, but not to a beach. All three of my kids did their study abroads Spring semester so the Spring when they had a break meant an international road trips. My son right now is on a road trip to Nashville, but not for wild partying. In fact one of the people in the group is a nice young woman. They stopped here on their way and were planning to stay at other relatives too. There are MILLIONS of kids in college. It's crazy to think that they are all Animal house pigs.
My son went on a spring break trip with a club from his university. It worked very well for him. He got to see and do things and go places he would not have otherwise (it was not a drunken beach trip, since it was a school sponsored trip). If he had come home, he would have been home by himself mostly, since I work full time. None of his high school friends had break as early as he did.
My other son is going on a road trip with friends to the southeastern US.
I say good for them.
I never took trips in college (well, except to Europe for study trips). No spring break trips, though.
We're talking about what here, a week? Most college students are adults and can really go and do what they want.
The reality is that the vast majority of college students don't go on a Spring Break trip and participate in a drunken Bacchanalia.
Just like plane crashes, the ones that do get the press coverage while he thousands that take off and land safely don't make the news. The same way with Spring Break, kids at home doing yard work doesn't make a good story.
I'll be heading to DC, I'm probably going to spend most of the week visiting the Smithsonian. I only know one guy in my circle of friends and acquaintances who's actually going on your "typical" Spring Break trip (Panama); otherwise it's either home, stay on campus, or another destination most typically don't associate with Spring Break.

why do most college kids have to waste their Spring Break over those things?
I don't think "most" do. In fact, I knew no one that did.

Reason: fixed typo
My daughter sometimes came home for spring break but usually just stayed in her college town. There was enough to do there that she never needed to spend $ to go on a beach vacation. Who pays for that anyway?

Kids go on spring break b/c its fun. I went 3 times throughout college and don't regret it one bit. Yes, it is a week long stint of drunken debauchery, but it was also a great experience staying with my 5 best friends just living 24 hours a day. Some of the craziest nights of my life came from those trips, stories we still laugh about now 8 years later. Now i am settled down with a fiance, bills, and family on the way. The last thing i regret about being young were those weeks. Yes we spent the bulk of the time bonging beers, hooking up with random girls, and acting like morons but guess what? I have the next 50 years to be a boring guy who works, hangs out at home and pays bills so it wouldn't take it back for the life of me.
