It's not.

Your experience at one school outside the USA does not mean all schools world-wide are identical.

Possibly because the college where you are is populated by a large selection of over-educated fools?

I don't know about the UK, but here in the US, the more educated one is, the less likely one is to smoke.

Male but there's a very high number of Female's smoking too which I have to say was even more of a shock! The university does cater though, to Asian students specifically (mostly wealthy) and they are the ones with the highest rates of smoking.

I'm not really sure why the rates are so high with them.

Perhaps, however, this University is ranked on the top 15th out of 200 in the United Kingdom so it is not full of uneducated students.

You should have seen it 25 years ago. It'd be times the amount of smokers.

I think it's just more because young people are most often the ones who take up smoking. Howver there are certain demographics that smoke more, though I am not certain why. For instance I've been in health care for 18 years, and tons of doctors and especially nurses smoke. When I had my first hospital affiliation way back in the day (18 years ago, lol) the head of the Respiratory Therapy Department smoked, that shocked even me lol.

My daughter just started her year abroad in the UK....and already she's mentioned more smoking (she mentioned the Asian students as well, but not limited to just them) and that there is much more drinking....and she's hardly a non-drinker herself!

I've noticed a lot more young people smoking then I've seen in the past, 18-25ish crowd. It is really disappointing given all of the information out there!! I think that a lot of these kids did not grow up in houses where the parents smoked and really don't know how disgusting it is to smell like smoke all of the time. Growing up, just about everyone smoked, all of my parents friends, my parents, etc. (all college educated, professionals). Public smoking was just fine, people smoked at their desks at work, etc. My generation, hardly anyone smoked and off all of our friends and closer acquaintances, I can think of maybe 2 or 3 that smoke. Our kids know several kids that smoke, however.
