My online searches often link to academic papers and publishers (e.g. JSTOR, SAGE) which restrict access to paid members with academic credentials. I'm just a menially-employed liberal arts graduate, and thus have neither academic credentials, an employer sponsor, nor money to pay for access.
Am I just out of luck or is there some other (legitimate) way to access the published research?
See if your local (public or university) library can provide you with Interlibrary Loan services. Or see if you can join Academia.edu, where many academics post their work for colleagues (i.e., other Academia.edu members) to download.

I think the problem is more on the paid than the academic credentials part. Even libraries have to pay for access, so university libraries are more likely than smaller public ones. The public libraries are more likely to have access to only the most called for ones; they can't afford the more esoteric academic ones.
The easiest way to get them would be to use a computer at your local public college or university. Many have logins at their computer labs to use the software, but there might be some in the library or something that are open access and allow you to use the internet and probably have automatic access to jstor, etc..
Go to google scholar and search for the same publication. Sometimes a pdf will be available there. If so, it would be shown to the right of the listing.
