I'm almost 22 and I want to be as independent as the average 26 or 27 year old. How do I do this?

Purchase a Time Machine. Use with extreme caution.

Why the rush? Someday, you'll be wishing for those 4-5 years back.

You millennials are a strange generation.

That is generally a poor foundation for anything. Figure out why you want to impress people and work on that flaw instead.

Learn to cook exceptionally well. That's fairly universal.

But you've glossed over the question of which people specifically you want to impress.
1) Think about who you want to impress
2) think about the things that seem to impress them
3) Learn that thing

And then read Gatsby or any of the other many novels in this vein to keep your expectations reasonable - you may either not succeed, or even if you do it may not bring you happiness.

What does that have to do with being independent?

You want a job? That takes time to build skill/knowledge if you haven't already started.
Same with having money, time lets wealth grow.

You want to "look older? Head to the tanning booth

if by 22 you mean you want to move out and live on your own, get a job and find a way to make it work with whatever income you have. Either have roommates or some other arrangement that you setup if you can't afford a place on your own.

The way the rest of us did. Get a job, move out on our own. Pay taxes. Burn water until you learn to cook. Get married. Buy a mortgage. Have a couple of kids. Hopefully in that order.

What? You thought 26 was party central?

get married.... that will add some age REAL fast, especially when you are the sole breadwinner and a few kids pop-up.

Another great way to age is to become a caregiver for a parent. I did that at age 18, and had to buy my first house at age 19 so we would have someplace to live. But... by then I was making BIG bucks ($2.65 / hr).

That's one driving factor that will guarantee disappointment.
