Fun fact: All of the schools that used to be in the Big Eight Conference arrange their initials ending in "U." Apparently it was some conference standard at the time.

University of Texas: UT, sometimes abbreviated as UTA in articles, but not to be confused with UT-Arlington

University of Houston: UH (and they are the 'Coogs' not the Washington State 'Cougs')
The decade I lived in Minneapolis the University of Minnesota was always referred to as The U, but I am sure there are many "U's" out there.
Only in Minnesota I heard people referring to the University of Minnesota as "The U".
Otherwise that professor that first suggested Minnesota to me referred to the University of Minnesota as just Minnesota. I wonder how commonly is that name used outside of Minnesota...
