University of Kansas is "KU," even though it's not "Kansas Univerity."

Colloquially:
University of Colorado-Boulder is 'CU'.

University of Richmond typically goes by 'Richmond' or 'UR'.

Virginia Commonwealth University is 'VCU'.

California Polytechnic State University is 'Cal Poly'.

University of Washington is 'U-dub'.

Fun fact: All of the schools that used to be in the Big Eight Conference arrange their initials ending in "U." Apparently it was some conference standard at the time.

University of Colorado: CU
University of Kansas: KU
University of Missouri: MU
University of Nebraska: NU
University of Oklahoma: OU

Texas isn't very creative:

University of Texas: UT, sometimes abbreviated as UTA in articles, but not to be confused with UT-Arlington
UT El Paso: UTEP
Texas A&M: A&M
Texas Tech: Tech
University of Houston: UH (and they are the 'Coogs' not the Washington State 'Cougs')

The decade I lived in Minneapolis the University of Minnesota was always referred to as The U, but I am sure there are many "U's" out there.

University of Maryland is oftentimes just "Maryland" but some people will say College Park.

CSU Sacramento is Sac State.

CSU East Bay is sometimes referred to by its old name "Hayward", or sometimes just East Bay.

UC Berkeley is Cal.

UC Davis is just Davis.

UC Santa Cruz is just Santa Cruz.

MIT is The 'tute or Institute.

California Institute of Technology is Cal Tech but sometimes also referred to as the Institute.

Case Western Reserve is just Case Western or Case.

I think it is referred to simply as "Wisconsin" as in On, Wisconsin. I know a few who attended and have never heard called by any other name.

Only in Minnesota I heard people referring to the University of Minnesota as "The U".

Otherwise that professor that first suggested Minnesota to me referred to the University of Minnesota as just Minnesota. I wonder how commonly is that name used outside of Minnesota...
