In the 2 highly technical PhD programs I completed they only taught for mastery (as it should be). You either got a straight line A+ or you dropped out. I worked multiple jobs to pay cash for my degrees which, in addition to coursework and research, resulted in 3-4 hours sleep for about 6 years of grad school. I was glad the lab space I was assigned was large enough for a cot and a fridge as I often spent the night there.

It didn't kill me. I either wanted the knowledge and experience or a I didn't. My choice. I did it and I'm glad I did.

Graduated with no debt, $2500 in my pocket (very helpful for a lowly paid postdoc), and the skills and contacts to be successful.
