The idea that all jobs will disappear, at least for the upper classes, has been around for a long time in sci-fi. Not in my lifetime.

Like in the 19th century, the author Jules Verne wrote about man travelling to the moon. Complete fantasy at the time. Then came the Apollo program and Neil Armstrong...
You can major in a social science (for me it was poli sci) and combined with with good electives (accounting , marketing , stats) , a working knowledge of economics , good writing skills (speaking skills can't hurt either)and some internships and you will be fine.

Of course Unemployment figures have been FALLING since 2009... Course National and Internation spin by GOP ( one term President talking points) continually said.. BUT BUT.. those numbers mean nothing> ie> Many NOT returning to market.. or Many forced to take lower level jobs.. or Number's don't reflect whatever.. SO in OTHER WORDS Meant NADDA!!
So now... What has changed.. Many are working jobs that are low level jobs than preciously held.. and MOST have MORE than ONE job in order to make ends meet!!
Bottom line.. middle to lower level working class have NOT elevated in to that " American Dream.. COL for most has elevated FAR FAR beyond wage increases.. SO between you and me.. Stock Market and job unemployment doesn't equate to anything close to anybody beyond those upper 2-5% who happen to feel better!!
I shutter to believe that those who are doing well, somehow FORGET ( don't Give a CARE) about those that exist day to day.. and still wonder why THEY still feel " LEFT BEHIND!"???

Job market reflects low rate that has been about that prior to taking office.. Unemployment right now has nothing to do with it. We are nowhere near full automation yet. When most jobs start to get automated, that is where we will see the unemployment go up.

You are correct, we have been hearing about this for a while. But the technology has not existed to make this happen. It was always wishful thinking and an attempt to scare workers that their jobs are going to be automated.
However, the technology is progressing to the point that full automation is becoming a reality. What is not known is how fast workers are going to be displaced and when full automation will actually happen. Will it take 20 years or 200 years? No one knows, but that day will come. An interesting question is who is going to buy the goods and services that are going to be produced by the computers, robots, and other machines if everyone is unemployed?
