I am 65 with a BA and taking some courses at a community college. This may sound stupid but my question is is it wise to read ahead of what the assignments are or just go week by week and do the reading according to the syllabus and at the rate the teacher is teaching the material. I’m worried I have not been in school in 45 years and maybe will not be able to retain anything if I get ahead of the syllabus. I just stared the class. But I find the subject interesting. Thanks.

You do you. There's no right or wrong way. Whatever works for you is best.
Who says you can only read the material once? If you find the subject interesting why not read as far ahead as you want? You could always skim/refresh your memory about specific sections again when the syllabus catches up.

If you read the assignments, you will be far ahead of most of your classmates, many of whom will not even buy the book(s).
thanks. It has been a long time since I have been in a classroom setting.
