I had a free ride for my undergrad and got a stipend for grad school. For incidentals, (semester abroad etc) I originally owed a bit over 10K. That is almost paid off now.
A couple years ago, I dated a woman who was in law school. We got along very well, but I knew there was NO way I had a future with her, and that became evident when she told me her total amount of debt. She was in, with both undegrad and law school, over 100k. Furthermore, the law school was mediocre in standing. I was getting my second BS in Physics and was paying out of pocket and working. No debt but there was no way I was going to take on her commitment. It was as if we had a couple of kids, without the kids. I can see how this will affect relationships in the long term.....
I went to a small private liberal arts college and got my degree in Biochemistry and English Literature. I owed about $16,000 when I was done with school. After about 5 years or so, I went back to night school (while working, employer paid half) for my Master's degree in Biology. I think I now owe about $23,000.
I get the Montgomery GI Bill which I pocket, my parents pay rack rate, and I live/go to school in a fairly low-COL (but has a relatively good economy thanks to the O&G industry) part of the US -- greater Houston, TX area.
After completing my PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology I will owe 18k. Not to bad. The program provides funding and tuition remission, but I only received about 14k a year, so until I got married I had to take out about 9k a year to help make up the living expense difference. Hope to pay it off within 2 years.
I'm just about ready to finish my MEd with around $25K. When I start working on my 2nd masters this fall, I'm taking one class at a time and having my school pay for it!
University education is very expensive in USA. My cousin finished his medical school in India. His total expenses tuition + boarding/lodging was hardly 100 dollars for his entire medical course. College education is almost free in India in government universities and heavily subsidized in private institutes. Now he is a senior physician in New York earning close to 200 K every year. India produces more engineers, doctors and graduates then USA. Ask them nobody has any loan for their studies there. The only country in the world where education is a business is USA.
My degree is in High School English/History teaching.
I owe $28,400, which isn't terrible, but I'd prefer that it wasn't there. I went to community college and paid out of pocket for that. Then I took out student loans for my last two and a half years. I later went back and got an extra certification for a couple extra thousand, which put me up to my current student loan total.
But I'm not taking out loans for grad school. I'll work, get scholarships, do whatever I have to do to avoid loans!
Right now I'm working a second job on the side to help pay off my loans faster.
I owe approximately $80K for my graduate and 2nd bachelor degrees...:O
