K-Luv: it sounds like you know a lot about running a Mac in a PC environment because you've really delved into it. I know my daughter isn't going to have the time to do that, especially in her freshman year in college. In fact, I DON'T want her to have to take the time to become fluent in Mac/PC interface because she needs to concentrate on her studies. When she's out of school and she can afford the latest Mac system and wants to go through what you've described, she can do that on her own dime.
We also got some additional info from a family relative, an engineer, who advised she may be learning to program and won't be able to do that on a Mac.

My seven year old grand daughter runs my Mac... And it's not the computer that is hard to learn, it's the software...
