There's always a way to make money doing what you love, but it may take more hard work, creativity and sacrifice initially, and many people aren't willing to do that and get stuck in easy, menial jobs. You also need to be able to realistically assess your talents in a particular field and accept the fact that you may need to adjust your career goals.
Take the arts, for example. Everyone always laughs when I tell them I not only have a BA in theater, but also an MA and I'm working on my MFA. They assume it's a waste of money and I'll be stuck working as a waitress the rest of my life. However, as much as I enjoy acting, I understand that I just don't have what it takes to make a living as an actor. I do have a knack for organization and all things technical, and I've done well working behind the scenes as a technician and arts administrator, which satisfy my creative desires and gives me a decent paycheck. I even got a fellowship for my MFA which means I'll be graduating with a lot less debt than my fellow students. I still get to work on shows, I still get to be creative, and I even get to act occasionally, but I am earning a decent living because I learned how to marry my passion to my talents and find work. That's how to make "doing what you love" pay off
I don't think you can fairly lump successful business men/entrepreneurs with doctors/lawyers etc. Doctor/lawyer is just the top of the matrix; think about how many hours they slave away to make that big buck.
A startup businessman may struggle at first while he learns a craft, but chances are he'll be making more than any doctor/lawyer could ever dream of within a few years. This society rewards balls and balls only; nothing else. It certainly doesn't reward studying; why else do we have threads like this or educated people constantly complaining? If these people quit depending on someone else for a paycheck they could have what they want. Ok I'm done for now.
Very interesting. I dropped out of college after one year, and I make more than any of those occupations.
The trick, and if I ever have kids, I WILL pound this into their heads, is learn the value of work. I've had a job since shortly after I turned 16. I started at my bank at 19, owned a house by 23. Life has been really good to me, and it had nothing to do with getting a degree. I know how to WORK!
The whole "hard work results in success" is a myth commonly believed by the working-class. In reality monetary success is achieved by knowing how to exploit your environment better than others.
But as an entrepreneur I like this myth, yes guys work real hard and all your wildest dreams will come true.

It's actually quite genius, the way this country is set up. Get the majority of people to think hard work will result in raises and a great lifestyle. Raises? HAHAHAHA, why would anybody give anybody else more money than themselves. hahahahahaha. Go ahead keep believing the system will take care of you. Meanwhile, throw beer, television and sporting events at them so they never question anything. And if you are smart enough to figure the matrix out??? There is plenty of room for you on the greener side. You just have to earn the hell out of it. Frickin Obama is ruining all of this though, trying to make us all poor. The tax loopholes/incentives are what keeps the giant wall from crumbling down. Please don't take that away from us.
