What kind of apartment can I get for 800 a month? Decent area? 1 or 2 bedrooms? Possibly a garage? Is that a decent budget? A safe and clean apartment is the most important thing, even if it's not brand new.

To answer your question, you should be able to find a decent 2 bedroom apartment for $800/mo. I rented off of Austin Bluffs and Academy for that. No garage but it did have W/D hookups. Pets were extra. I thought the area was somewhat safe as I only had 1 night in 2 years where someone was in the parking lot threatening to kill someone. Some military personnel have PTSD so this can be too common in COS.

BTW, stay out of the SE quarter of the city particularly by the airport. It is the worst part of town, even worse than Citadel Mall. Lots of break-ins and non-fatal shootings in those areas. COS has a major gang problem that isn't reported by the newspaper or the TV stations as it would scare away all the military retirees that COS is attracting. Nobody else really seems to be moving there as any job paying more than $10/hr is going to the Denver metro or Pueblo.

We just moved from COS to Pueblo West. You can't beat COS for beauty and it has every store you can think of...but as a previous poster put, the gangs are becoming a problem - especially SE. SW is a good area but expensive. You get what you pay for - an apartment (or house) with a garage will be 950+

Just wanted to add we didn't move because we didn't like where we were. We were renting a patio home in the SW part of COS - we are in Pueblo West because our children work in Pueblo and Canon, so this is a good place to live. The climate is a little nicer but the mountains are further away. I wouldn't leave anywhere near Academy - once you are here you'll see...just like anywhere else there are rings...further north and east you go the newer the construction, the nicer the neighborhood and the higher the rent. I would not live in a complex for anything unless I had a garage and they run about $1100 - might as well rent a house.
