I live in the 80918 area, and I'm very happy with it. My kids went to Palmer HS, and other areas from that zip code go to either Doherty or Coronado High Schools. None of these schools should cause you any concern at all. Pretty low crime rate as well.
Mike's right -- you'll love it here.

I live in 80910 and its not.... fun. Lots of crime, gang activity, etc etc. As soon as my lease runs out I'm GONE.
But that doesn't mean that the entire 80910 area is bad. Just the square mile I live in

The worst parts of Colorado Springs are better than the average areas of Van Nuys, Panorama City, Pacoima, Reseda, Sylmar, or anywhere in the middle of the once desirable San Fernando Valley.
Oh, by the way, homes there on the flats of the SFV cost $500K for a 1300 sqft foot house built in 1954.

Moving to COS from Thousand Oaks and freaking out! I have been reading the posts about the evangelical religious type and feel like pulling the plug on COS. Give it to me straight from someone who came from my neck of the woods, please. I am a teacher and my husband an artist, living in Manitou Springs sounds like the bet fit for us, but I would probably teach in COS and don't want to feel like Joan of Arc. Please help, thank you!!

I moved from TO (Lang Ranch, near Westlake and Los Arboles) last year. Religion probably won't be in the top ten differences you'll notice by moving here. No traffic, lower housing costs, a little harder to breath when exercising, colder winters, etc. Personally, I hate religion and living here doesn't bother me. I don't think I've ever seen anyone doing anything other than driving to church. Big deal. It seems like this proactive evangelical stuff is a myth.

I was recently back in Colorado Springs to do a "look-see" for retirement. I have accepted that going back to Boulder is not happening for me due to the increase in expenses, and the many changes ("mallification" -- strip malls all over) that have reduced the charm of the city.
I spoke to some people who said that Buddhism was growing in COS, and that there was more emphasis on diversity of religion, rather than just fundamentalism. (I don't want to be converted, nor harassed about religion -- it is a private issue to me.)
I was just curious, because some other posters have commented on being more open and "liberal," and are concerned about fitting in COS. My observation was that although COS may be more "conservative," that there are certainly other options available. I noticed that many posters seem to discourage any actively open people to COS, and that doesn't seem right to me.
By the way, I am neither "conservative" nor "liberal" -- I am a "middle-of-the-roader." I noticed some blanket statements about being one or the other, and I think there are many people like me who are more balanced and do not gravitate to one extreme or another. I'm curious what your observations are on this issue. Thanks.
