That is the Manitou Incline, it is a mile long but you have about 2000ft in elevation gain, from 6530 to 8550. After about 7500 I can REALLY tell a difference in elevation! There are people that use this as a warm-up for their real exercises, I call them crazy!

This isn't even the most steep part. There are parts that have a 68% grade.

Katie, my seven year old, at the top!

Me at the top!

Looking back down.

I am SO proud of myself for making it. Even though I exercise regularly, I'm certainly not in tip top physical shape, this took every ounce of mental drive that I had. The main goal was to make it to the top. Then smaller goals of where we would stop to rest for a while, then even smaller goals of "I can make it to 10 steps away."

This was something I've wanted to do for a while now and I'm glad I did it!

cool pics!

I've always wondering: what's at the top on the incline? Does it just dead-end up there?

Yes, there are a bunch of rocks and then you can go down (or up!) Barr Trail. It reminds me of any trail around Mueller or even at Garden of the Gods the Palmer trail.

One thing I forgot to mention was that everyone on the incline was SO nice! Everyone was very encouraging. Anytime someone would pass me (and that happened often) they would say, "Great job!" "Keep going!" "You got this." etc... I loved the camaraderie.

Thank you so much for this. I have been wanting to do it and I love the pictures! We are new to the area and love all the exercise opportunities! I am training for the Avon Walk this summer and this will be a great thing to do to cross-train.

I just heard a news story on the radio this morning that mentioned it's now actually "legal" to climb the incline.

I guess it was never technically a legal thing to do, but since everyone has been doing it for years and years, Manitou Springs city council just decided to make it a "legal" activity.

Now that it's legal, the city can address issues such as safety, parking, etc.

Great pics and good job!

No, it is one step "closer" to being legal. It is still illegal to climb the incline at this time.
