Hi,

Does anyone know what's going on with PPIR, lately? I was wondering why the track was shut down a few years ago and if Nascar may return in the future.

Thanks

NASCAR will not be back at PPIR. Some drivers do practice there, such as Gordon who was there in February preparing for Phoenix.

Pretty sad what happened to that track.

Thanks for the response, PokerMunkee. It's really unfortunate to hear that.

Here's the story on the sale, it's been 5.5 years now. IIRC, the new owner planned to strip out the seating and use it elsewhere, as it was far cheaper than buying new seating. Not sure that ever happened. If you go to that newspaper, use their search box with "PPIR" for a whole list of stories.

Thanks Mike from back east for the link. It's really amazing that this has happened to the track, especially since the next closest major track is in Kansas.

PPIR did not bring the financial success that was expected. They were banking on getting the Cup (NASCAR) cars, but it never happened. They were broke.

ISC comes in and buys 'em out...not because they want to continue operations there, but ISC was and still is trying to get a track on the east side of Denver. What most people do not know is that ISC bought out PPIR to take away competition for the track they wanted to build in Denver. They felt they would have a better chance of getting approval for the track up there if PPIR just went away. Well, still no track in Denver and it's very unlikely ISC will build one in the next 5-7 years.

Bullitt, good info. A track east of Denver makes more sense than this location here.

It's kind of funny, in a way, that being almost 600 miles to the nearest major track would've been a big help, but it wasn't. If we draw a map circle for 600 miles around PPIR, there's no one living out there on the prairie to draw from. There are ~3-4M people in the Denver metro area, but that's it, nothing else but tiny farm towns for hundreds of miles east, south and west of PPIR. It's not like the track at Dover, DE, where 30-40M people live within a half-day's drive.

Here's an excellent article which was written last year:
Colorado dreamin': Talk about bringing NASCAR Sprint Cup races to the Front Range continues to be so much hot air | North America > United States from AllBusiness.com (http://www.allbusiness.com/sports-recreation/sports-games-outdoor-recreation-auto/14621197-1.html - broken link)

I'm hoping for a track in Denver, but think it's 5-10 years away. For now, a trip to Vegas isn't that bad.
