Default Nice Neighborhoods Close to Schriever?

My husband just accepted a job on Schriever AFB and I have a few questions for you wonderfully helpful people.

We are moving from Louisiana, I actually spent most of my childhood in Colorado, mainly in Canon City and Florence. I am very excited to be heading home again. That being said, I know lot's has changed in the 15 years I have been away!

I remember Schriever being pretty far East, fairly isolated in the plains part of the city. Are their any neighborhoods with a decent commute that are nice with good schools? We have two small children that will be starting school in the next couple years and I am looking for a nice area of town. Ideally my husband and I like older parts of town that have been revamped. Older homes that have been redone inside but the neighborhood still having character. I like the amenities of newer house but dislike cookie cutter neighborhoods with no trees and a foot os space between your neighbors house and yours. Here in Shreveport we have an are of town that is full of updated Victorians that I just love and was wondering if there was anything similar in Springs. I have heard a little about Old Colorado City but everything I seem to find on the internet that is located there looks very rundown and not very well kept.

If anyone could point me in the the right direction I'd be very grateful. Thank you so much.
