We are being relocated to the area in a mere 2 1/2 weeks We are a ski family with our own set ups. We are interested in taking advantage of the early annual pass purchase programs which end the first week of November it seems-so we can't really try them out.

We have a 6 year old who skis and a 3 year old who will be on the powder for the first time this year and then taking advantage of childcare services (this is a must!). We are a military family so do qualify for discounts but just don't know which ski area would be the best fit for a young family.

Thanks in advance

You can't beat Monarch, it's the closest and cheapest, and fun!

Wow $30 an hour for babysitting at Monarch. For that I could take a nanny(not that I have one!) Maybe my next post will be for a cheap babysitter

Our kids learned to ski at Breckenridge. It's a really neat town and has a lot of fabulous places to eat and things to do for apres ski, if you're interested. It's expensive--most of the areas in Eagle and Summit county are, but they're also the best areas to ski. Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, and Vail are basically in the same area, then there is Winter Park, A-Basin and Loveland west of Denver.

Your idea of a cheap babysitter isn't bad. If there is a teen in your neighborhood who loves to ski and whom you can take with you, it would be about the same as a nanny if you buy them a lift ticket and pay for them to babysit after skiing, so not a bad idea.

This is a link to Summit County and Vail Associates ski passes:

I believe there's a newer "family-oriented" ski hill just west of Denver (south of the Idaho Springs area) called Echo Mountain. Looks to be roughly 1.5 hours from Colorado Springs, which I suspect makes it the closest ski hill. I suspect "family-oriented" roughly translates to "smaller than the mega-resorts" but that may not be a bad thing if you have young children. Hope you find a good place!
