In today's issue of the European Stars and Stripes newspaper, US Army Europe Commander General Hertling is quoted as saying that the 3rd Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson will deploy to Afghanistan in April. The trend recently has been for units to deactivate upon completion of deployment. How will that affect COS economy?

Since it isn't the first time, a brigade has deployed from 4ID, I don't think it will affect the economy in a very very dramatic way.

The most immediate thing that comes to my mind, is that many rentals, apartments and homes, may suddenly become vacant, and perhaps housing sales will go down, but what else is new in our market??

I'm in Afghanistan, the 4th ID is already here, all 4 BCTs at that.

We're certainly not in the stone age, on this FOB anyway. We have wi-fi and I have an Afghan cell phone too.

Well, the AP is reporting that 3000 troops from the 4th BCT 4th ID deploys to Afghanistan in April.

The Army has been deactivating some units when their deployment ends as part of the draw-down. If that happens with this brigade, what will the economic impact likely be in COS? Limited to Widefield/Fountain?

No way will the army deactivate the 4th ID. It's the largest Infantry division in the system.

Not the division, the brigade. As you undoubtedly know, they are eliminating quite a few brigades army-wide over the next few years. A common practice (these days) is to de-activate a unit after a deployment.
