Internet access/type of varies on where you live. Some of the new home builders have started home divisions where neither cable or high speed/DSL service is available yet. You can always get satellite/dish and dial-up until it is available.
Where I am, I pay $60 a month through Adelphia/Comcast for channels 2-77 and for DSL. Qwest also offers internet through a package, but not where I live. We also have a wide variety of cell phone carriers. I signed up years and years ago for our package that offered a lifetime agreement plan through Qwest- 2 cell phones (free phone calls from phone to phone and to home) with 6,000 minutes for $60.00 a month. Our total phone bill for both home phone and cell are about $90.00 a month- that includes all those stupid fees that they charge ya. I haven't a clue what half of them are really for, it seems like everytime you turn around there is a new fee or one of them has gone up.

I'm paying for 8mb down from comcast. I get 4mb. Its not my equiptment. Since comcast offers "up to" thats pretty much the end of what I can do.
other providers can't get to me either.

Also, comcast scans your system for servers and file sharing (regardless of whether its LEGAL or not)

What are you (plural) using to measure throughput?

Try this: testmy.net - speed test and broadband tools

I heard that COS is looking into building a Wi-max network sometime in the near future. That would be awsome for everyone. For those who don't know what wi-max is, it's just like wi-fi, but has a range of 10-20 miles, just like cell phones, where as wi fi has a range of out 1000 ft. They already have it all over the place in europe and japan, and it's totally free for everyone

We just switched from Adelphia cable internet to Qwest DSL and have been very happy as well. My husband's brother works at Best Buy (one of the Geek Squad guys) and he's the one who alerted us to Qwest DSL. Their speeds are faster than Adelphia's and through the end of this month, if you sign a 2 yr agreement, you keep the price of $36.99 for life. The Qwest internet page actually has an example of speeds.....fast, faster and fastest, on a graphics-heavy page. You see the difference in speeds of that page loading. It was pretty cool. Qwest apparently has really cleaned up their act. They used to be horrible. Now they're winning all sorts of service and JD Powers awards.
