Leaving voluntarily disqualifies for benefits. The entire system is terrible. If you have a job, it would be wise to be removed from it through the employers choice so you can qualify. If they suggest you were fired for cause--to prevent paying benefits, the burden of proof will be on them.

Au contraire...the UI system is funded by employer contributions based on a maximum of 26 weeks of benefits, however under Obamanomics the government is paying people benefits for up to 99 weeks. That difference comes out of the general fund, and that indeed is "getting money from the rest of us."

You got me there, Bob... those unemployed folks have all the luck. I meet them all day long at my job... with their foreclosure notices, utility shutoffs, piles of pawn tickets,.... What an extravagant lifestyle we are all supporting! Next they will be wanting help getting their medication or some other luxuries.. where will it end?? Don't they realize how hard their misfortune is for ME? Sorry in advance about the sarcasm.... I grow weary of people complaining about what an injustice it is that our tax dollars are used to provide basic needs for our fellow americans. Our tax dollars are wasted in countless ridiculous ways..this is not waste. Be gracious and thankful its not you. I am proud to be able to work and pay taxes and do my part to help others.

Which was done after the last Republican administration pretty much destroyed the economy.

In a normal economy, 26 weeks is pretty reasonable. In this economy it is not.

Read up on the history of the Glass-Steagall Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. The safety mechanisms put into place in the 1930s were repealed during the Clinton Administration. The first signs of the rot at our economy's core were the implosions at Enron and WorldCom, also with their origins planted firmly on Clinton's watch. GW Bush had a big part to play, too, but this mess was not all his doing, and not even mostly his doing.

Now there's a typically snotty response that misses the point entirely.

The point is that UI should be funded by premiums paid for by covered employees (indirectly through employer contributions), not by the taxpayer. That's how insurance works...everyone covered by the system pays to distribute the risk. Self-employed people, for example, aren't eligible for UI benefits, so why should they have to pay via higher taxes so that others who ARE covered get benefits far beyond the premiums paid into that system?

Tax money used to pay for the basic needs of others is socialism/communism, not insurance. Taking money from people involuntarily to pay for the needs and wants of others is what we call redistribution of wealth, a classic tenet of socialism/communism. "From each according to his abilities, and to each according to his needs" Lenin would be proud of you.

After I retired from active duty I got a job in Iraq. When my contract ended I came home and applied for unemployment benifits and was denied. I was told that since I draw a military retirement I could not draw any benifits. I asked then asked the lady if they were going to return what my company had paid for me back to them. the silence was deafening.
