Problems with IRS (credit, home, school)

Anyone know of a good resource locally to get tax help?

I have an interesting situation that I need to consult with someone about, but like most folks, money is a concern. Open to any decent ideas, people you trust, etc.

In this case, it involves school and the opportunity credits and 2009 tax returns.

Find a private tax accountant. Some work out of a home office, and their rates can be very reasonable. There are many.

I've had very good experience with "MyTaxLady," here in town for all my tax prep stuff. Small business, locally owned, tax accountants. Very personal service. I'm sure they're going to be busy as heck from now till April, but you can schedule an appointment with them.

I'm almost hesitant about including them here, because I want them to succeed and do well, but not grow too busy, and then raise their rates!

I'm a single guy, homeowner, have some investments, retirement income, pretty straight forward return prep for Federal and State, and was going to Libery Tax....they're all over town....typically have sign holders jumping around on the street corners.

While they prepared my taxes fine enough for a couple of years, their rates sky-rocketed! I paid round about $120 one year, and the following year, with no changes to my tax situation, it was over $300! When I asked why, the preparer said, "that's just what the rates are this year." Didn't return.

MyTaxLady was about $120 or so. If they raise their rates significantly this year, I'll be looking elsewhere again, but they are real tax accountants, not just temp employees that fill out a computer application. I'm sure they can assist.

Well, you can go down to the local IRS office on South Circle. I've found them to be kind and helpful and well-informed with any questions you might have. You can find their hours and services on the IRS website.

Go to your nearest Federal IRS office, you get help there for free.
