We live downtown in Old North End, a block from Monument Valley Park. Since we arrived a year and a half ago, we've had regular sightings of our two neighborhood foxes, and regular visits to our bird feeder from a family of raccoons who hang out next door, and one deer in our front yard. Shortly after we arrived, we saw an elk grazing in someone's front yard on Cascade near Colorado College. Other than our huge squirrel population (which my wife insists on keeping well fed), that's about it for our wildlife sightings.

I know this is a little further south, but when I was stationed at Fort Carson, we used to see Elk and Mule deer right in the parking lots at night. The first bull elk I ever saw was standing right in the middle of a packed parking lot staring at me from 20 feet away. Prairie Dogs were all over the place, to the point that they would affect training. And one time only, I saw a mountain goat about 5 miles into the training areas.

We hear and sometimes see coyotes. There are two herd of deer that come around, a bachelor group and a family. We have tons of rabbits, a bobcat was seen around here. I've seen one snake in the last 4 years that I've lived here, it was just a small garden snake. I'm in the Old Farm neighborhood.

Default Da Bears

This was taken by a neighbor (who's a photographer) right across the street on Fountain Creek in Manitou. If we're lucky we have one in the neighborhood every summer.

Never seen a snake in all my 28 years here, except for a cute little garden snake and one yellow and brown one down in the Royal Gorge. Lots of deer, racoon, fox and coyote. Haven't been lucky enough yet to see a mountain lion.

This guy was just off my deck in Divide. We did have rattlesnakes when we lived above Garden of the Gods Rd in Pinecliffe. There was nothing below us at the time except the Forge. Now it's built up, so don't know if there are still rattlers in those rocks. In the mountains, we every critter--fox, skunk, raccoon, deer, elk, mountain lion, bear, porcupine, coyote, rabbits (if the coyote don't get them first), squirrel (especially black, tufted ear squirrels), mice, chipmunks.......no snakes in the mountains, though.

Have seen snakes out in the planes area around the airport, (no pun intended!) But both were nice bull snakes, although the one in our backyard was a bit unnerving for my teen girls.
You will see deer in many parts of the city, also alot of rabbits in some areas. If you don't want the bears or the cats, safe bet is east of I-25.

My son does a lot of mountain biking in and around Woodland Park and in 8 years only saw one dead snake on a trail. I, until that time, thought that snakes couldn't live up that far but evidently they can unless it was a pet that was released and got killed. He didn't know what kind it was. Just to give you a gauge, I don't think twice about walking bearfooted through my back acre in the summer in Woodland. I always say in CO you see the things that can kill you coming unlike in the SE part of the country where the dangerous things live in the grass and bite before you even know they are there.
