I'm not sure how much cheaper USAA is compared to the others but we have had them for about 18 years. We use USAA for all our insurance needs. The customer service has always been great and we've never had any problems with claims over the years. We own multiple homes and multiple cars and wouldn't think about switching to anyone else.

I've been with USAA since I started driving back in 1978. I use them for everything: car and home insurance as well as banking and investments. I love them.

As to price, I can't really say as I've never really looked at anyone else. I can say this though. Onne time I got a telemarketing call from GEICO and they said, "We can lower your rate!!! Who are you with now?" I said, "USAA." She says, "Oh, the four letter word. We can't beat them."

Take that for what it's worth.

I switched from USAA to Farmers after USAA raised my rates because of moving to the Ute Pass area. I'm saving over $120 a month. I'm sad to let USAA go as I had them for seven years and they were great.

I'm with Fullback, except I go back even further to when I was first eligible to join, back in 1969. Never looked at another company. Have had a couple of claims over the years (hurricane damage). No problems. Just told to hire a contractor and get them (car and house) fixed. Didn't have an adjustor or multiple estimates to deal with. Just a great company all the way around. I use them for other services than insurance, as well. I'm sure there are cheaper outfits out there, but I doubt there are any better.

When I had teen-aged drivers in the house, Farmer's was actually cheaper than USAA. Now that they're above 21, they're still on my policy, but I've moved back to USAA.

So, short answer, USAA will generally be cheaper and almost always have better customer service, but it's still worth your while to make a few calls and see what others can do.

If your only measure of value in insurance is price, there may be some that can beat USAA. Even then, usually not by much.

I don't know a single person that's had USAA screw them over or drop them like a hot potato after a claim--I won't say that for Allstate, State Farm, Farmers or Progressive.

Default Problems with USAA

I was a member of USAA Insurance Co for 36 years. When I first became a member they were just a wonderful company. They provide insurance and banking services to military men and women and their families. Within the last year; I tried to refinance my home and I was transferred to three service reps in their USAA Savings Bank mortgage dept. Each and every one started to help me then either went on company training or vacation. When another service rep was assigned to my refinance, they did not have the information as to what the previous service rep's information regarding my refinance. I was sent papers to fill out with incorrect figures and they quoted me wrong information from day one regarding the fees associated with my refinance. I tried to speak to a supervisor in the dept that never returned my phone call. I became so upset with the lack of help and information; I finally had to stop my refinance.

Even with the USAA credit card; I had to deal with less than helpful employees in customer service.

Due to my experiences above I finally contacted the USAA CEO's office to file a compliant due to the fact that any contact I had with USAA became a nightmare for me.

I checked around and I did find that there are other insurance companies that offer better deals than USAA. If you belong to a credit union; many of them also offer insurance; check with them and see if you can get a better deal.
