PET Friendly Rentals
Hi there...I found this forum while looking at more information about the Springs. My hubby, kiddo and all of our pets are looking to move to the Springs within the next year or so. We have 2 great danes and a cat and so far, I have registered at rentclicks.com to check out the average rental properties and locations. It sends me the properties that match my search criteria.
We do not have the financial capacity at present to purchase a home, which would be ideal...but it seems that most rental properties have such strict limitations on pets. For instance, most properties have a $25/month/pet increase in rent or some outrageous pet deposit like $600/pet!! Our boys (the dogs) are inside dogs, and not destructive.
So. my question is this...do any of you know of any property management companies that would accept such large dogs? They both weigh about the same a maybe a thick Rott, but are quite leggy.
Also...how is the job market for healthcare....I am a respiratory therapist-registered. My hubby is in restaurant management...any jobs like that there also? We are from Louisiana and just cannot stand the crime, poor school systems, and climate here anymore. Please....any suggestions or info would be great!!

Hey there-
You know finding a house for you to rent is not out of the question. Expect to put down a deposit though, that is just the way it is.
For healthcare you are probably coming at a good time. We are opening up 2 more hospitals in the next year or so. Which will make 4 total. Then there is probably plent of work outside of the hospitals. You can go to Penrose-St. Francis Hospital (google it) and Memorial Hospital and look under their employement. You can also go to the www.gazette.com and find listings there for jobs. We have ALOT of restaurants here, so your hubby will probably do fine. Can he transfer w/ the current restaurant he is working for?
Anymore questions? Ask away! bashep

My hubby works for an independent restaurant right now, so transferring is not an option. However, we have looked into a headhunter-type company to get his resume out. I'm glad to hear about the hospital thing!! I currently work for a state-run Level 1 trauma center in Northwest La. and I love it!! I thought about getting hooked up with a travel company to get my feet wet and put my feelers out for the different facilities.
I figured as much about the deposits for the pets. I guess I will just have to do some calling once the time gets closer. I have seen a few properties where the owner wants to interview the pets!! I got a big kick out of that. I have 2-130 lb scaredy-cats if you can believe that!! They love us, just not anyone else!! I am going to do some more searching, but I am certainly looking forward to getting out of the swamp!!!

I can't say exactly how it is down in the Springs area, but when the wife and I moved here about 2 1/2 yrs ago we had a hard time with the pets. We had 1 dog (a Chessy) and 1 cat. Limited our search a lot, and we're even told by one place no because of the cat!
I would expect you're going to have to pay a VERY large deposit for those big dogs. I bet you will honestly have a very hard time finding a place. To be honest the springs area didn't seem "pet friendly" to me. We took our dog down their to go camping, and we couldn't find any place even for him to go swimming. Was told we would probably have to go down to Pueblo to find a lake for him.
The health care market all over is in huge demand, so I don't see many problems. No real idea about the restaurant though, but I doubt it would be a big issue.

That's kinda what we figured...about the large dogs. However, if the owners only knew that these guys are couch potatoes....might make a difference. I would think that a border collie or some other high-energy dog would be less desireable cause of the ruts they run in the grass. Who knows?
We really got lucky here...our landlord didn't ask for any deposits for the pets and he was cool with the Danes. Perhaps it's because he is also in the healthcare industry....he is a physical therapist.
Thanks for the input!!

deposits
There's not many single-family properties that will absolutely refuse pets. I can testify that you will invariably find either a small rent increase or a deposit increase, or both. $25/month increase actually sounds pretty low to me -- some landlords would ask more than that.
Everything is negotiable though -- you can talk to the owners and explain the situation, and maybe get some kind of break.

Pets and Renting in COS
I just read on a property managment site that ElPaso county only allows 4 pets per rental. What is this?? Is it true? We have three dogs and three cats and don't plan on re-homeing them just because we are moving.
Can any one give me info on this??

Hey there-
That is the first I have heard of that, C/S native. However, I will say that your biggest struggle is going to be finding a landlord that let's you keep that many pets. Normally you could have MAYBE 2 animals. But 6 is rare. What part of the Springs are you hoping to move to? Don't worry about El Paso County, they would never know unless you were getting complaints. bashep

I have four indoor cats, and had trouble finding an apartment community that allowed that many...most only allowed two pets. I would be less than honest before I had to board my pets anywhere. I don't know about El Paso pet restrictions. Best of luck.

Are there many pet restrictions for condos or townhouses? I have three cats. I have seen some listings saying "pet free complex". Is this typical?
