My friend and his family are relocating to Colorado Springs from Las Vegas in January 2008. Due to the nature of his job, there is no way of getting around this timetable; so that leaves him traveling from Vegas to CS in a U-Haul the last week in December or the first week in January. My husband and I offered to help make the move with them, but I can’t help but wonder about the road conditions during that time. They will be in a U-Haul and we will be following behind in a 4 wheel drive SUV with chains available… any thoughts?

Most likely no problems.
Prepare in advance by reserving hotel rooms along the route - cancel if you don't need them.
Worst case you stay in a hotel room for one night or so until the interstates get cleared - unless there is a horrible blizzard, then it is two nights.

Again, these are doomsday scenarios.

I would not take a U-Haul across I-70, especially that time of year. When we moved from SoCal we used I-40 to I-25. The weather is usually milder and the elevation is lower. Those passes on I-70 are brutal on a loaded rental truck. It's a bit longer, but you can make better time. I don't know if a U-Haul is allowed over Boulder Dam though. Whichever you decide watch the forecast closely. Good Luck.

Ditto vfrpilot, recomend Vegas thru Laughlin to Kingman jump on 40 to 25. No U-Hauls over the dam. Check mapquest but it's probably a hundred miles longer but weather and mountain passes make it a better choice.

Agree, 40 to 25 a better choice in winter, but watch Flagstaff area. They can have high winds and blowing snow over frozen roads. After that it should be smooth sailing.
