We just saw a mountain lion behind our house. It was about 400 feet behind the house This is the first time in the 20 years we have lived here that we have seen one, though I am sure they have been around before. We have deer, and they say if you have deer, you also have mountain lions.

It was neat to see it, but now I worry about my dogs, barn cat and horses! I will have to escort our dogs outside in the back yard since it could easily jump right over our fence.

I just wanted to share this Christmas surprise! It will be known as the Christmas Kitty!

I saw what I believe were antelope out in a field near our house in rural Peyton. Is that unusual? We just started living here. Wow indeed on the big cat! Is it heavily forested where you are?

Yes, antelope (actually called pronghorn), are common in the plains. Usually don't see them much in the wooded areas. Where I live, I am in woods that border open grasslands, so I get deer in the wooded area and open areas and pronghorn usually up the hill in the wide open grassland area.

What neighborhood are you in?

And, BTW, they could also jump right over the fence when you are out there, too! Be careful!

what about your personal safety in escorting your dogs should you encounter a mountain lion? will you be carrying a weapon.

I don't own a gun. I read up on what to do if you encounter one, but who knows what you would really do when in that situation. I know my instinct would be to run but that is exactly what you should NOT do. My dogs are let out into a fenced area so I will only have to worry if it comes into my yard after them. I will close horses and cat up in the barn at night.

In colorado!!!

The area I grew up in NO CO in had them near the country school, and of course on our ranches. You need to be smart and watchful. I'm not so sure they like domestic game if they can catch wild game, in the wild. They never bothered our pets (but we kept 2 dogs for that reason (The dogs were always on the hunt 'together'). and us kids were always riding horses alone.

A wild animal needs to be pretty hungry or distressed to digress from it's natural habits.

The bobcats were much more likely to poach a cat (just in case the coyotes missed any cats...)

Coyotes will stalk a weak / old domestic dog and team up for the kill.
