Good information, as we are looking to relocate to The Springs.

I'm in IT, mainly doing network/system support stuff. Been working for a midsize company the last three years. I have a B.A/MCSE and make $55K/year. I'm 25 and been out of college for 3 years now, so I guess I'm doing alright but really want to make about $75K. I really hope to make about $60K in Colorado Springs. I do not have military experience but have a perfect background (got a gaming card lol). What is required to get Active Clearance? I take it a company must sponsor you, probably not something I can do on my own.

I forgot to mention earlier I have applied for a number of civilian jobs through usajobs.gov and other sites. I have made the "list" for a MWR job at Ft. Carson, but haven't heard anything else yet. I think I will see more activity after the new year.

Civilian jobs can take quite a long time to go through the process. There are some jobs that I applied for in May that haven't budged.

Yes your company or contract has to sponsor you for a clearance.

Just curious, how do you go about receiving an "active clearance?" My entire background is in IT but nothing military or gov't related.

Curious...

Well, you don't just get one. You basically have to be hired into a position that requires one, then the company pays for the investigation for you to get it at what ever level is required. Most of the time, non-cleared employees are hired in a contigency status (temporary clearance) while the clearance investigation is being conducted. While people with active clearances (recently retired or separated military) usually have an advantage, there are plenty of folks who never possesed a clearance that do get hired on by the defense contractors. They are willing to go ahead and pay for that clearance because of outstanding skills and knowledge. It is generally easier for a non-cleared person to get into a position with requires a Secret clearance rather than a Top Secret or SCI clearance as the former is significantly less expensive for a company to get for their new employee than the latter.

Chad, I was just wondering how you got your foot in the door over at Schriever? I am due to separate from the military in about six months time and I am looking to head out that way to settle down. I'm particulary looking for IT/Sysadmin jobs there and I've seen a few posted on USAJobs website. Just wondering if you could give me some insight on the whole process of getting a job there, I work in IT with the Navy currently and hold a security clearance. Again any help would be appreciated.

Chad, what websites have you looked at? What about Military.com, monster, dice, or careerbuilder.com? Have you posted your resume? My hubby posted his back in January and he is still getting calls weekly from doing that.
