I need your help specifically with area and schools
Wow! We are a military family moving to Colorado Springs (Ft Carson) mid February. Hubby is thinking about an apt and i'm thinking about renting a house. Our housing allowance is $1200 which is what we're used to in San Antonio BUT i'm sure what we get for that price in Colorado Springs is completely different.
My frustration is finding an area that is ideally 20 min away from the base, max is 30 min from base, and is in the "excellent" school district. I've done my research on greatschools.net and have read posts on here. SD20, 38 and some in SD 11. I would ideally like for my son to attend a school in SD20. He's 6 and currently in Kindergarten. I've also noticed that some schools have an all day or half day kindergarten?????? And some elementary schools start at 1st grade??????
My question is, where should we look so that we are not too far from Ft Carson (especially during the winter snowy months) but are still able to attend an "excellent" elementary school in either SD20 or 38. I dont know how far SD 38 is from Ft Carson. I need specifics. I've tried to find yahoo groups, cafemom groups for help and you all are my last hope! Thank you!!

D20 is about 30 minutes and D38 is probably 40 minutes (just guessing) in moderate traffic. D12 (Cheyenne Mountain) is an outstanding district and it is much closer to Fort Carson.
There are also charter schools to consider but I don't know too much about them.

Here's a link to a thread with school info, you may have seen it. A key thing in this old post is a cross reference of zip codes to school districts, which allows you to search realtor.com or other sites to find rentals, there are a bunch of such sites. You can easily rent a nice house, being sure to keep the cost of utilities in mind for your budget (probably $150/month for average home). Coming up Powers Blvd from Fort Carson, D20 begins at Woodmen Road.

That's what I show in my cross reference, and all of their schools are in 80906. See: Welcome to CMSD

D49 Falcon School District

This is the story I got about 15 months ago from a teacher in the area:
District 49, out near Falcon / Peyton has some history. The voters there rejected a bond issue for school construction the other year, so the only HS became overcrowded, so they brought in mobile classroom trailers, parents got ticked at their kids being in trailers, many pulled their kids in favor of home-schooling, school enrollment dropped, with fewer students in the school, D49 cut the number of teachers in the school. I'm not sure the exact status today, but that area is growing quickly and I'd think that new schools simply must be built to handle growth. FWIW: we lived in Fairfax County, VA for over 30 years, schools are considered sacred, and school bonds always pass there with about 75% approval. I can't believe people in Falcon voted down a bond issue for school construction, apparently it's true, not sure if there's more to the story.

Its been difficult finding a place in D11 that meets our needs. What can you tell me about D3???? I'm tired of reading year old reviews and want personal experience from native COS citizens.

Precisely what do you want to know?
Do you have the school data? What did they tell you?
