There are plenty of nice CUVs in the market now. Vehicles like the VW Tiguan, Ford Escape, or Mazda CX-5, all offer very good mileage with 4WD for those few commuting times it'll be an issue. The rest of the time they'll be great around town with lots of storage room.

Colorado is Subie country, and for good reason. They've added some girth and lbs. over the years, but remain a solid choice.

If price is less a concern a BMW or Mercedes AWD diesel wagon would get you true luxury and high mileage.

Subaru's are the unofficial "official" vehicle of CO! I gots an outback last year, and I love it.

AWD all the time..no slipping and sliding, and plenty of ground clearance to take it just about anywhere (on-road, off-road, camping, hiking, fishing...grocery sto').
