You might find that Independence pass is not yet open:

"CO 82 Eastbound / Westbound Independence Pass (Milemarker 42-84)
Scheduled to reopen May 26th 2016, weather permitting."

Independence is a great trip for most people. However, if the OP has any fear of heights or concerns about driving a mountain road with no shoulders and 1000'+ drop offs, this is most definitely not the road for them. My wife is one of those and this would be a white knuckle, high anxiety, hyper-ventilation trip for her if I took her over it. Myself, I feel it is pretty tame. Your mileage may vary.
Good point to bring up for someone not used to mountain driving. I really want to do this drive, but I'm afraid I would be like your wife. The upper reaches of Trail Ridge Rd are starting to bother me and I made DH turn around on Tahoe's west rim road last summer.

Driving to Aspen from Colorado Springs via Independence Pass is pleasant. It can be a bit nerve wrecking on certain sections of the Independence Pass, but not bad really.
I'd like to believe this...
