There is enough of a hispanic population in Northern KY that Biggs now carries an entire section in their grocery store dedicated to Hispanic foods and US Bank installed new ATM's in Northern KY (about 8 years ago) that are in English and Spanish, and the DMV has their instructional information in English and Spanish.

I know this is an old thread but I just have to say that Cinci"expert" is not an expert on Northern KY. You're right Patty. There is enough of a hispanic population in Northern KY to make a difference. Also, I am a teacher in a NKY middle school and I am well aware (not oblivious) that there is plenty of gang activity. In fact, tonight on channel 5 news, they are featuring a story on gang activity (of course they're focusing on Cinci, so I guess the expert missed that).
As for the redneck comment Cinci"expert" that's really mature. Who is oblivious? And who reads for comprehension? Expert HA!
ETA: I was doing some research on gang activity and that is how I came about this thread btw. I couldn't let the expert get away with his/her misinformation. My school is about 25% or more hispanic btw.

Fountain Blvd...yes. Fountain, Widefield, Security no. I know several who still don't lock their vehicles or houses because of how safe they feel down here. That doesn't mean there aren't any gang members...I know they live all over the city. I used to teach at an alternative high school where most of my students where gang members. The majority of gang bangers live in school district 2 and district 11. However, there are some in every district.

As an educator, I recently attended a presentation from a police officer about gangs in the Springs. Just about every high school has some people who identify as gang members. Some are more popular in some neighborhoods than others. But there are very few true 'hardcore' gang members, the type who are really into criminal activity, maybe were raised in the gang, etc., and most of those are transplants from somewhere else. In December that shooting at a 7-11 was a gang-related shooting and there was some fall-out after that. Most gang activity is delinquent type behavior - tagging, etc., but some are involved in robbery, breaking and entering, and drugs, and gang fighting, etc. It is a relatively minor problem currently in the Springs, but with police pushed to their limits due to financial issues, keeping things under control can be a challenge in the future, perhaps. Some of the real gang stuff is run from the prison down in Florence - they send their messages up the I-25 corridor. Fountain public schools is concerned about a possible influx of gang members from Texas and other areas with the new troops coming in and trying to prepare for it.

Hi everyone,
I am a SoCal transplant. I grew up with gangs on every corner, you had to learn to mind your own business, join a gang, or avoid them altogether (easier said then done).
I moved to Colo Sprgs with my wife when we decided to start a family. We moved to the Southwest side of town (broadmoor area), and we couldn't be happier. Our neighbors are friendly, our neighborhood is immaculate, there is virtually no crime in our 'neck of the woods', and the weather is splendid. As for the humorous times we've been to the citidel mall, it was truly laughable. The fake wanna-be gang members with their oversized T-shirts and pants below their rears makes me chuckle. These 'gangsters' here in Colorado Springs are nothing really to be feared, just keep your nose in your business and they will scurry away like the little rats they are.
As for the comment that stated that 'a society where everyone caries a gun, everyone is polite', I like that. I'm not sure if that is indeed true, but in principle I think it is.
Also, for those of you out there with a CCW, I would like to thank you for thinking of others while you carry a firearm. People like you are the second line of defense against random acts of violence, and I realize that the police are not omnipresent, and because of this I am glad there are people like you out there.
In short, Colorado Springs gooood , Los Angeles baaaad.

Comparing the Gang Capitol of the World to COS gangs is like comparing cancer to a common cold. It's nothing like LA, but there are issues in COS. Most of the blogs were right about southside. But let's also remember that COS has an above average property crime rate then the rest of the nation. Homicides have been in the record territories the last couple years also, so let's not pretend it's all ok. Stay away from Harrison, Sierra, Mitchell, Wasson High School areas. (Basically, the areas these schools serve) There are a lot of gang bangers who moved from LA after selling their shacks for 400k in Compton and moving to COS. In COS the gangsters are respected and tend to have a lot of followers who will do anything to fit in. They always say, fear the wanna-be's who are trying to prove themselves, not the actual gangsters. The jail is so overcrowded in COS, they added tents to house the inmates. If you really want a glimpse of the trash in COS, just watch Dog the Bounty Hunter. Yeah it's a little trashy show, but they do show the garbage and issues that surround COS when it comes to crime, drugs, and gangs. (The show is filmed half the time in COS). But the bottom line is, there are gangs, and it depends what area of town you live in. Briargate, the only gangs you have to worry about are the gangs of church goers on Sunday morning, on the other hand, if I'm on Fountain and Chelten off MLK (<<< hint, hint), I will be more aware of my surroundings. Yes, people are shot and killed, sometimes for stupid reasons such as gangs on the South Side. Goto www. cspd.gov and click the maps and history links. You might surprised at the amount of burlgaries, thefts, vandalism cases, etc. that are taking place in COS, some which are gang related. But no, it's nothing like Los Angeles.
