Hi folks!

I need some info from the people back home. I'm tryinng to find a rental thru the Internet without being able to go there on the ground and check things out. My current town of Cortez is about 400 miles from the Springs, so it's not like I can just hop into the car and go see. Anyhow, I came across a rental for a 3 bedroom for what appears to be a major steal of only $700.00/mo.

The owner claims to have had to make an unexpected move out of state and wants to help some deserving renter out with low rent payments. Are there rental scams going on in the Springs these days? The zip of 80916 rings no bells in my memory bank. I've tried googling the area and one of the hits was to a you tube video called "Sunday Afternoon drive in Colorado Springs." What a hoot! Turns out to be a grainy video of a drive thru Garden of the Gods and Manitou Springs. In the background you can hear music broadcast from the Springs CW station and a couple arguing over whether to include the soundtrack or not. Great comedy but crummy info. I need some real feedback, not looney tunes. Thanks!

Sounds like a scam, I wouldn't pursue that if I were you. Wherever there are rent ads, there are scams.

But 80916 is the east/southeast side of town. Mostly older but I believe there are some newer homes as well. It has a bad rap but it all depends on which neighborhood you're in. On the plus side, you're close to the airport and Powers shopping.

Almost certainly a scam, though not the usual "we're doing missionary work in Africa, that's why we're not there to show you the place, but you can wire funds to..."

If it sounds too good to be true you can bet it's a scam.

Why don't you share the link here? That would be helpful in judging whether the ad has the earmarks of a scam. Not every CL post is; I got my current place in Manitou via CL.

Ah, the magic words "airport" and "Powers." Thank you! I remember that area fairly well from back in the day. It has always had a bit of a bad rap. There were some parts that were OK, others not so OK. I had no desire to live in that part of town back then and I imagine that time hasn't changed things much. No offense to anyone who lives in that part of the Springs and loves it. It's just not my personal cup of tea. I'll cross that one off the list and look for other possibilities. Lucky for me I don't face any deadlines on coming back although I'd prefer sooner rather than later. The right place will come up eventually.

That listing has vanished from CL, so I can't share it. I have nothing against Craigslist per se and I've seen some ads for nice places in Manitou that are costly enough that they've got to be real. CL is just one more search tool along with padmapper and the rest. Caveat emptor and all that.

No, I hadn't seen that. The price is right, but I'm not overly fond of the senior living thing. I prefer to be part of a regular neighborhood and yell at the kids to get offa my lawn! Also, I'd prefer to find a place west of I-25 in the 80906 zip and points north of there. That's where I grew up and if I'm going to come home, I plan to come HOME even though I know there have been plenty of changes since I've been gone.

This isn't home home but if you looked at Manitou Springs you might be tempted by this https://cosprings.craigslist.org/apa/5671279140.html
mountains, near home, if the transportation could be handled (your own or cab/bus combo sparingly). Good luck with thinking / searching.

Thanks! Yeah, that's much more like it for me. Trouble is they won't take dogs. It's important to me to have a dog in my life. I need that extra nudge to get out there and walk for my health plus it's good to have a budddy who will bark at strangers and all the other positives of canine companionship. I need to find a 2 bdrm, prefer west of I-25, max $900/mo, and landlord who will accept a housing voucher. See why it's been taking me forever to get back? I'd really prefer to stay out here but my health issues require treatment from a specialist - something that is much easier to find on the Front Range but next to impossible out here. I'm doing my very best to stay positive, but there are times when I just want to throw my arms in the air and say "To hell with it." But all things come to she who waits. *sigh*
