My family will be relocating to Colorado Springs within the next few weeks. It seems renting a home in that area is some competition game between big realtor companies. Are there other options to find housing in this area besides the best wins? Maybe something with simplicity like an ad in a local paper without the hoops and games?

This is a good resource for housing ... but you're right, it's a tight market these days.

Be wary of ads in Craigslist - local papers don't carry as much as they used to for rentals.

I also sometimes see "For Rent" signs on homes while driving around, e.g. in the OCC and Ivywild neighborhoods. I'm not sure that's an effective strategy for finding housing if you're on a limited time budget, though.

I have always found houses by driving around in the areas I want to live whether for sale or rent. Very often with rentals, by doing so you can find an owner manager rather than a property manager. Owners are a lot easier to deal with. I had absolutely no luck with craigslist or ppar as they were already rented but still listed. You can also join a neighborhood listserve in the area you want and post what you are looking for.
