I grew up in that era as well and partook in air raid drills. At my school, we filed out to the hallway and the girls would huddle up facing the wall and the we boys would do the same, shielding the girls. Kind of gallant, don't you think?

We didn't separate by gender (we only had 2 in those days, eh) we just kneeled down in the hallways, tucked our heads between our knees, and kissed our asses goodbye.
