I am somewhat new to Colorado and some of the DMV stuff is baffling. So I just bought a new car from a dealership and traded in a vehicle.
What do I do with the license plates from the old vehicle?
How do I get credit for fees I already paid to the DMV on the old car?
I have temporary paper plates on the new truck. Will real plates come in the mail? Or do I need to go get them?

Thanks

Hang on to your old plates. You will want to take them in when you get the registration notification and have them reassigned to your new vehicle. They may want to inspect them which is why you will want to take them with you. I've seen this happen about 50% of the time.

If you reassign the plates, you will get a pro-rated credit towards the new plate cost. If you do not reassign them, you do not get a refund.

You will not get new plates in the mail. You get a notification of when the DMV system is ready to process your request for regular plates, whether that is reassigning your old plates or purchasing new. However, sometimes I have seen temp tags expire before this occurs at which time you would need to renew the temp tags.
