Meet the Green Mountain Falls man whose trails are having a breakout moment | Colorado Springs Gazette, News

Green Mountain Falls is a town near Colorado Springs that is up highway 24 (Ute Pass) and has nice views and features hiking trails that were developed by Dick Bratton who is now 81.

"Though, people might not know they have someone to thank as they hike Catamount Trail, the adventure beginning at a waterfall and continuing through the enchanting Garden of Eden. Others favor Crystal Trail for the grand views. Bratton could tell them about the blood, sweat and tears shed over all of those switchbacks.

But likely he wouldn't, for he's not one to take credit. Others give it to him.

"He stands upon a pinnacle," reads an email from Robert Houdek, the region's mountain expert who consulted the fellow cartographer when updating the Pikes Peak Atlas.

Houdek calls Bratton "a trails champion of the first order" and "a remarkable diplomat who persuaded others to welcome trails rather than opposing them."

In a town resistant to crowds, Bratton began his solo mission exclusively for Green Mountain Falls, not for the masses on either side of the pass. Soon after retiring at Peterson Air Force Base in 1981, he moved to the town where he would be mayor from 1996 to 2004. But first, he was a concerned citizen."

It's a good place to visit on a summer morning.
