Our two malls here are pathetic, particularly Citadel. Why can't a city of this size support a decent mall?

Instead, we've become the land of strip malls. Much of Academy is one big strip mall. Much of Powers is one big strip mall.

Don't tell me retail is dead. I was up at Park Meadows yesterday and I've never seen a mall parking lot so filled with cars other than the week before Christmas. I had the park at the farthest fringes of the parking lot. And inside the mall it was terribly crowded.

I think the problem is that jobs in Colorado Springs pay too little. That creates Dollar store and Wal-Mart shoppers, not mall shoppers.

Consider how many jobs pay $100K+ in Denver vs Colorado Springs.

It may also reflect the fact that typical big malls nationwide are doing poorly and closing down as big stores like Sears, JCPenny’s, etc go out of business.
Smaller malls like Briargate are doing better.

Oh yes...that definitely explains by Park Meadows was so crowded yesterday that it was difficult to even find a parking space and why you couldn't walk in a straight line once you get in the mall due to the crowd.

My wife drives to Park Meadows for clothes shopping. They evidently have the proper brands for upscale dresses and such.

As for me, I couldn't care less about expensive clothing so while she spends money, I usually just hang out at the Tesla store ogling their latest creation and technology.

She also enjoys the Cheesecake Factory restaurant with their daunting 25 page menu; I usually just go for a salad.

Some upscale shopping is available in Colorado Springs at the newest "mall" called "The Promenade" https://www.google.com/maps/place/Th....7943059?hl=en

But the only store there I've witnessed is the Apple store.

Typical implies a majority but certainly does not mean everything. Therefore, while it is typical of many large mall outlets across the nation to be struggling, it does not necessarily mean that all malls are. Obviously Park Meadows has it figured out to a degree that they are thriving, much like Cherry Creek and Colorado Mills. However, I'd also hazard a guess that the Denver metro has numerous failing malls as well. Westminster, Cinderella City, Northglenn, Buckingham Square have all failed and died in the Denver area. Chapel Hills and Citadel, while not necessarily stellar, are surviving. Whether they can create the differentiation that allows them to thrive again is yet to be seen.

So why don't you spend you dollars at the local mall instead of going to Denver? Have you told anyone there why? Made any effort to communicate the dis-satisfaction?

You have Park Meadows, CC, and the FlatIrons in Denver that are malls that do particularly well. All three are regional destinations that pull in population not just from the metro area of 3 million but from the entire state and surrounding states.

Colorado Springs has a population of less than 500K- El Paso County has less than 700K. You're simply too small to support a regional shopping center like Park Meadows.

The promenade is nothing but a strip mall. I hate strip malls.

The one store at Park Meadows I couldn't understand was a technology store -- packed to the hilt -- but it had no identifying name to it. Weird.

Yes, you're right (in my view). Some malls "get it" and do thrive.

Why do I go to Denver? The selection at (for example) our local Macys as compared to the Macys at Park Meadows is drastic. It's like a junior department store compared to a full-scale department store. For example, a couple of years ago I needed to buy a new wallet. To me...that's Macys. The Macys here had -- at that time -- only brown wallets. I wanted Black. I went to Macys at Park Meadows they had a full selection. The Pennys that used to be at Chapel Hills was the worst Pennys I ever saw. The Pennys in our small town back in the 1950s was better.
