Agreed, but it makes taxes quite variable. Two identical homes adjacent to each other could have property taxes that are exponentially different.

Yep... the sellers my 1957 home were paying $1200 annual property tax.

The day I bought the tax went to $8800

I'm OK with that as I knew going in what my tax obligation would be going forward and fully intend to be in their situation 50 years from now...

They were a retired couple in their late 80's on a fixed income... Prop 13 made it possible to remain in their home.

I was way too young to have voted from Prop 13 back when it passed... but I am forever grateful to those that made it law... especially since it was given no chance of passing... every government group, unions, teachers, nurses etc... were steadfast against it.

With the escalation of property values... I can fully understand why mayors would be getting worried when it comes to property taxation
