Who likes the bike lanes on Cascade Avenue? (Colorado Springs: safer, transportation)

I think they look quite nice although I rarely see a cyclist in them. Thoughts on this small project?

Pretty indifferent to them myself. I can see where the change can accomplish a few different objectives. My wife doesn't see the logic in them since she believes we don't have large enough bicycling population to justify them. She does thinks they are laid out much better than some of the other bike lanes that have been installed in some of the downtown locations (especially Weber). A couple of my neighbors are indifferent and a couple don't care for them at all.

I was out quite a bit last weekend and probably saw a dozen different cyclist at different times using them. There also was large group of 20+ heading south at one time as well. So at least the first weekend they were open, they got used.

On another site I visit, the general consensus is that the changes are stupid and will create more problems than they solve. Yet these same people complaining about the change in layout will also complain about the proliferation of cars, high speeds on the roads, and overall congestion of the area.

Nextdoor is the place to see the anger, for real.

If it makes people not drive 50mph on Cascade, I'm for it. Nevada next!! :P

Haha yea Colorado Springs is full of a bunch of whiners. I'm indifferent to the whole thing but I do like to see alternative transit options promoted.

Cascade is one of my favorite places to walk. I rarely see a bicyclist.

But as I was driving around downtown on Sunday, a number of streets with all sorts of really weird parking and bicycle lanes...sometimes both together...is ridiculous. In some places it's a maze.

And as far as speeding on Cascade...maybe the Springs should start enforcing traffic laws.

Yea I personally see alot more cyclists in the broadmoor bluffs area I have seen a few downtown but certainly not in numbers.

They are awful. So many cars are parking and/or backing out of parking IN TO the bike lane. Today, I had a cyclist swerve in to my lane. He was lucky I was paying attention. I used to do a lot of mountain biking, and I can tell you I would not use those death trap bike lanes. This is an experiment just like the Research bike lanes. They will be gone when the first few cyclists are killed...

We had the same here for a bit and it takes a while to get everyone used to them. They can serve multiple purposes. Calming traffic, giving alternate transportation and a safer way to exercise. I commuted to work for 5 years by bike , it was great.

I hate the new bike lanes. A poorly conceived implementation of alternative transportation needs. Hardly anybody uses it now. When it’s winter nobody will. Look at the intersection of bijou and cascade. No dedicated turn lane so traffic backs up blocks. Terrible idea. Colorado Springs is just to spread out to ever be friendly to anything but cars.

Downtown is the perfect spot for bike lanes. My girlfriend and I have used them often. The city wants to create a more dense core, and providing alternative transportation infrastructure to deviate from a car centric ways is important. These lanes are not the same as the research "project" bike lanes, they are here to stay. I think you may be surprised at the usage of bike lanes in the downtown area.
