If you want to live close to ski resorts, Castle Rock is the wrong place to be. You can be within an hour or so of some of the resorts (not counting traffic), if you live on the western edge of the Denver area (Golden, Western Lakewood), or in the foothills (Evergreen). The closest resorts (i.e., Loveland) would be more like 45 minutes from there, again not counting traffic. The ski resorts from Downtown Denver are about 1 1/2 hours, not counting traffic.

Ocean Minded,

I tend to agree with tfox. IMO Castle Rock is too far from the Mtns. and other things like colleges/universities and young people. If you are really into to skiing and other outdoor mtn. sports why not suck it up and live closer? Although a little more expensive it is still much cheaper than CA and the lifestyle is higher energy.

I moved to CS from CA several years ago. We love the Rocky Mountains and I go up there with my family as much as I can. But after living here for a while I would prefer to live in the Western or N. Western Denver area closer to RMNP and some of the ski areas. I almost accepted a position in Longmont which is right outside of Boulder and really close to RMNP. Our whole family loves to hike up there and to just spend time in the Rockies. If I were to do it again that is the area I would target being an outdoor lover.

The further south you go from Denver the drier the climate seems to be. Although it is dry almost everywhere along the front range there are definately less lakes and water. And Castle Rock reminds me of Arizona with those big rocks. I love water (lakes, streams, rivers, waterfalls, oceans, etc...) and the mtns. And it sounds like you guys would enjoy being closer to those things if you go often. It surprises me how little some people who live here actually spend time in the mtns. You can see them every day. But if you don't go out and enjoy them then it is kinda like living near the coast but never actually going down to the beach for a sunset, etc...

Because I am also 'Ocean Minded' I do miss the coast sometimes more than others. So we are actually considering the PNW for our next adventure. Portland is ~ 1 hour to the rugged coast or mtns and less to the Gorge. If you move here you have to prepare yourself for living in the middle of the US. Remember you can't just get in your car and DRIVE to the coast (~16+ hours) when you miss it. Of course you can fly out on occasion or make the long road trip every now and then.

But Castle Rock wouldn't be my first choice if I was still in my 20s. Check out Golden, Longmont, Broomfield, Evergreen and Boulder to be closer to the Rockies.

My 2c,

Derek

I have to ask, Does anyone ever ski at the Broadmoor? I've never been there but, it is just minutes away.

I also hear that COS is thinking of another ski resort. Where would that be?

No skiiing at the Broadmoor but there has been talk of getting skiing going on Pikes Peak supposedly years away though.
