I am coming to Colorado in a couple of weeks for vacation. I love to come out but as long as I can remember I have always been terrified of driving on high mountain roads with no shoulder/guard rail etc.
The last time i was out, i ended up going over Independence Pass and I still don't think i have fully recovered. Knowing this, are there areas around the springs and other areas for that matter that you can advise that I avoid? Fear of heights is a curse and i hate it but I think i'll have it forever. Any help would be appreciated. |

Like anywhere else, stay on the road and keep your eyes forward. If you are not prone to driving off the road on flat lands, chances are you won't start on a mountain road

Yeah, I always say the same thing. WHy do we need gaurd rails? YOu drive ON the road, not on the edge of it.
You won't find any high mountain roads here in the springs, unless you go in the MOUNTAINS. |

Well, you don't HAVE to go into the mountains. I guess it all depends on where you plan on sightseeing. Do you know any places you plan on seeing?
BTW. Independence Pass is very intimidating! I always recommend going to Ouray ...... NOT in your case though! NOPE! You could go to Cripple Creek, that's not a bad drive. There are some beautiful views and things to do there. You could just stay along I 25 but, that would be boring.IMO. What do you want to do?? |

We are thinking about taking the kids to the North Pole, then from there we are uncertain. Recommendations?

I went over Indy Pass at night with a friend!! It was pretty scary, but next time I visit, I'd like to do it during the day. (although heard it may be worse!)
If it is a phobia you have and can't get past that, then you may need to find another way around the passes if possible. Good luck. |

The North Pole is awesome!! Just don't you ride on the ferris wheel if you are afraid of heights!!
![]() Cave of the Winds, Garden of The Gods (all in the same area). I'm not sure if the drive up to Pikes Peak is all that bad,..anyone??? You could drive to the west into Manitou Springs and Woodland Park, then maybe find a picnic area. My area (south and west about 38 miles) is Canon City. There is the Royal Gorge (you can walk across the bridge) and, Buckskin Joe's. Actually it's just a few miles to the west! If you like river rafting, you can do that here on the Arkansas River....there are tons of rafting places. As far as places north into Denver and the mountains that way, others will chime in if you want to drive a little further. |
