This article sums it up nicely, I think....

The real key is to secure it beyond the attackers willingness to put for the effort needed to crack it. There's a huge difference in importance of the information residing in my network and the information residing in a bank or the military.

All encryption can be broken, it just depends on how much time you have.

True, but would you want someone stealing your bandwidth? Internet is expensive.....

Good luck at my house. One of the additional protections is that the signal doesn't get very far out of my house (and not even to all rooms in my house). I think I'd notice someone sitting on my porch with a laptop.

Just use Wireless. It's cheap and easy. Just make sure, like others have said, to secure it. And by securing it, use WPA.......NOT WEP. I get free Internet right now from my neighbor who uses WEP. I broke the key in 5 minutes using free tools (aircrack) with a Linux Live CD. Yep, I'm cheap!

Ha, I keed about the stealing part.......I have my own Internet. But I was able to break into all of the WEP access points around my area. Even found some interesting folders being shared on one of the neighbor's computers.

So, don't use WEP! Use WPA/WPA2 with a long/complex key! If it's complex enough, it's basically impossible to crack it.

Kind of off topic but not totally, I just upgraded my DSL from 1.5 to 7 last week. Ah, bliss. Not only that, it's cheaper than the 1.5 was.

Oh and yes, I recommend wireless if you know how to secure it. Much easier than cable drops.
