There was a thread a few days ago about crime increasing the the Springs area. I responded and several people responded to me. I said we are contemplating a move there but one reason I want to leave Louisville is because the crime is high (mostly in certain areas). We visited 2 weeks and felt safe and I asked a few people and said they felt safe. What do you think about the statistic saying I believe murder is up 80%? For those of you who have lived other places how do you feel as far as personal safety? I am a woman with a small boy. I feel unsafe walking or biking around here alone and feel unsafe taking my boy by myself to a park many times. When we visited we hiked around Garden of the Gods and Air Force Academy a lot and never felt unsafe due to the high volume of people and my husband was with us. I would like to be able to walk and not feel I need my husband as bodyguard. ANy thoughts would be much appreciated. Are crimes mainly in certain areas?

Well yeah, but just don't go there. It's that easy. I mean, I have a concealed weapons permit, but there's parts of downtown colorado springs that I wouldn't go to after dark without a small army behind me.

But for the most part, you're safe here. Mostly due in part to what you said. Lots of people everywhere.

Crime is everywhere.

Actually it sounds as though you might need to get some sort of help/assistance if you are afraid to be out alone.

Anywhere you go, there's going to be crime. Especially with the economy the way it is now, everywhere has increased crime and, as with here, it's usually concentrated in certain areas. But on a whole, we are not considered a high crime area. That's not to say a car won't hit you when you're cycling.

lalahartma, Are you saying I need psychological help? If so that is beyond rude since you don't know me and don't know my past experiences. I'd say we all need help in some ways. I have grown up in a small town and have been very sheltered. I have had a couple of frightening experiences in which I was close to being the victim of a violent crime and once against my child. I just want to feel safe. I have read many articles in which it states a woman out alone jogging or biking has to be very careful. I am also not the most brave person in the world. Thanks for the other useful responses.

Probably help meaning some sort of hired protection, or body guard.

My wife has some of the same concerns you have and maybe a few more. And theses also come from past things that have happened to her so I understand where you are coming from. To behonest we live downtown and my wife feels pretty comfortable down there. Even with the homeless shelters not to far away. SO I would say go for it and try out the Springs.

trust your instincts if its feels unsafe it probably is.
dont know the area real well but as a whole being out on the street experience has changed in my life time. streets are now very mean. america has elected to not police it borders, an under the table NAFTA and have gone from punishment of wrong doing to incarceration or deportation on a open border, which is imho no punishment and does not deter crime. the most significant event is that self defense has been criminalized (much like japan of its golden years). only protection allowed ordinary people is avoidance and barricading. interestingly we are allowed to possess firearms but god help you if you use one.

I agree. I don't think, however, that this solves mindset problems by itself.
