I recently purchased a home in Mountain Estates (Florissant). I am installing an emergency generator and would like to know how to wire the transfer switch up to the main circut panel. No, I am not an licensed electrician, but I have been building houses and wireing them for 30 years. I have not had the opportunity to wire up a transfer switch yet. If anyone could offer any educated advice, I would appreciate it.

No offense intended, but that's not something I, for one, would be willing to take responsibility for. What if something went wrong and you were injured? My advice is contact a licensed electrictian. Especially if you've been wiring houses for 30 years, you should have some pretty good connections.

A transfer switch isn't that difficult to install. It just splices into the Circuit box, where the 240v line comes in. I've wired one in, but you do have to call the electric company to dissconnect your electricity to install it, as the main line coming in has to be dead (or else you will be)

If you need to have the power disconnected, you'll probably need a permit before the electric company will do that task. But I have done work without disconnecting the line power, but all I was doing as adding breakers to feed sub-panels (need permit for that too). Just don't sneeze at the wrong time

Because an improperly installed xfer switch can place voltage on the lines outside a house (endangering the lives of linemen working on those lines in an outage) it's generally required to have a permit and an inspection of the work. It's an important safety issue.

Some things require licensing and permitting for good reason...i.e. safety.
